What is Takaful?
Takaful is cooperative protection. Participants contribute to a shared fund on the principle of Tabarru' (voluntary donation), and Kalkaal manages the fund and pays eligible claims under the policy terms.
How is Takaful different from conventional insurance?
Takaful rests on mutual cooperation rather than the transfer of risk for profit. Contributions are pooled in a shared fund, investments are Shariah-compliant, and a Shariah Supervisory Board oversees products and surplus.
What is Tabarru'?
Tabarru' is a voluntary donation. Each participant donates part of their contribution to the fund to help other participants who suffer a covered loss.
What is Wakala?
Wakala means agency. Participants appoint Kalkaal as their agent to manage the fund for an agreed fee, which is disclosed in your quotation and schedule.
What happens to any surplus?
Any surplus in the participants' fund is handled under the direction of the Shariah Supervisory Board and applicable regulation. It may be held as a reserve for future risks or distributed as decided. A surplus is never guaranteed.
What is Retakaful?
Retakaful is protection for the fund itself. Kalkaal shares part of larger risks with Retakaful partners so that claims can be paid with confidence.
Who supervises Kalkaal's Shariah compliance?
The Shariah Supervisory Board issues fatwas, certifies products, oversees surplus distribution and conducts Shariah audits.
How do I get a quote?
Choose the product and share the details requested, or ask us to call you back. A Kalkaal advisor will contact you to discuss suitable cover and your contribution. Sending a request does not activate cover.
How is my contribution calculated?
It reflects the risk you want to protect, such as the vehicle, the goods, the sum covered or the size of the group. Your advisor will explain it before you decide.
When does my cover start?
Cover starts only when Kalkaal confirms it under the terms in your schedule. Submitting an enquiry does not create cover.
How do I make a claim?
Report the loss as soon as possible by phone, WhatsApp or at our office, then send the documents listed for your product. Kalkaal assesses the claim and pays eligible claims under the policy terms.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
They are generally excluded unless your schedule says otherwise. Please declare all conditions when you apply.
Can a business insure all its assets under one arrangement?
Yes. Share an asset register (vehicles, buildings, servers, high-value equipment and machinery) and an advisor will arrange complete protection.
How do I make a complaint?
Tell us by phone, WhatsApp, e-mail or at our office. A member of our team will acknowledge your complaint, look into it and explain the outcome to you.
Where are your offices?
Our headquarters is in Hargeisa. The Find us page lists every office with its address, opening hours, directions and contact details.
What is the difference between comprehensive and third-party cover?
Third-party cover protects you against claims from other people for injury or damage caused by your vehicle, but it does not pay for damage to your own vehicle. Third-party, fire and theft adds cover if your vehicle is stolen or burnt. Comprehensive cover also adds accidental damage to your own vehicle. Your schedule shows which level of cover you have.
Can someone else drive my vehicle?
Only the drivers your schedule allows are covered. Some schedules name specific drivers, while others cover any driver who holds a valid licence and has your permission. If an unauthorised or unlicensed person is driving when there is an accident, the claim may not be covered, so tell a Kalkaal advisor who will drive the vehicle before you decide.
I sell or repair vehicles. Which cover do I need?
Motor Traders Takaful is designed for dealers and repairers. It can cover vehicles in your care for sale, repair or demonstration, and your liability while you or your staff drive them, as stated in your schedule. Vehicles your business owns and uses every day may need separate Motor Takaful. A Kalkaal advisor can explain how the two fit together.
What is the Member ID card for?
Every member covered by Medical Takaful receives a Member ID card. It shows your membership details so that a medical facility and Kalkaal can identify you and check the benefits in your schedule. Carry it with you and show it whenever you attend for treatment. If it is lost, tell Kalkaal straight away.
Where can I see my benefits, limits and waiting periods?
Your schedule and Explanation of Benefits set out the benefit sections you have chosen, the limits for each, any waiting periods, and the conditions that apply, for example to maternity. Read them before you need treatment, and ask a Kalkaal advisor if anything is unclear. Treatment outside your chosen sections or limits is not covered.
Can an employer include staff dependants in a group scheme?
Yes. A group scheme can cover employees only, or employees and their dependants, such as a spouse and children. The employer chooses the benefit sections and limits, which may differ by staff grade. To prepare a quotation, a Kalkaal advisor will ask for a staff list or census showing each person's date of birth and the dependants to be covered.
What is the difference between Clause A and Clause C cargo cover?
Clause A gives the widest cargo cover: it covers loss of or damage to the goods from any cause, except those the policy wording excludes. Clause C is narrower and covers major events only, such as fire, explosion, sinking, stranding, collision and jettison. The right choice depends on the goods, how they are packed and the route they travel.
Should I choose single transit cover or an open cover?
Single transit cover suits occasional shipments: you arrange cover for each consignment. An open cover suits regular importers and exporters: one agreement sets the terms, and each shipment you declare is covered without arranging cover trip by trip. Under an open cover you must declare every shipment that falls within it, as your schedule requires.
Are fishing vessels covered under Marine Takaful?
Fishing vessels belong on this Marine page, where they can be covered under Hull and Machinery Takaful. They are not covered under Agriculture and Fisheries Takaful, which is for fish farms, ponds and cages. Tell a Kalkaal advisor about your vessel, where it operates and its condition, so the right cover can be discussed.
I rent my home. Can I cover just my contents?
Yes. Home Takaful can cover the contents of a rented home, such as furniture, electrical items and personal belongings, without covering the building, which is usually the landlord's responsibility. You can also ask about optional liability cover. List the items you want to cover and their replacement value, so your contribution reflects what you own.
What does Business Interruption Takaful add to property cover?
Property cover pays to repair or replace damaged buildings, contents and stock. Business Interruption Takaful covers the income you lose while the business recovers, such as loss of gross profit and the extra cost of keeping trading. It applies only after damage that your property cover accepts. A Kalkaal advisor will ask for your turnover, wages and auditors' fees to set it up.
Why does the value I declare matter?
The values you declare should reflect the full cost of rebuilding or replacing your property. If you cover property for less than its full value, any claim may be reduced in proportion to the shortfall. Review your values every year, and tell Kalkaal when you buy new equipment, add stock or extend your premises.
What does 'protracted default' mean?
Protracted default is when a customer has not paid a covered debt and the payment remains outstanding for longer than the period set out in your schedule after the due date, even though the customer has not been declared insolvent. Once that period has passed and you have reported the overdue account as your schedule requires, you can make a claim.
How are customer credit limits set?
You tell Kalkaal which customers you want covered and the credit limit you need for each. Kalkaal reviews information about each customer and agrees a limit, which may be lower than the one you asked for. Sales above the agreed limit are not covered. A limit can be reduced or withdrawn for future sales if a customer's position changes.
Does Credit Takaful cover interest or late-payment charges?
No. Credit Takaful covers the unpaid price of goods or services you have sold on agreed credit terms. Interest, late-payment charges and penalties are not covered, in line with Shariah principles. Your claim is based on the price shown on your invoices, less any payments, credit notes or recoveries.
Which animals can be covered?
The animals covered are agreed with you and named in your schedule, along with how each animal is identified. Tell a Kalkaal advisor which animals you keep or trade, how many, where they graze or are held, and their purpose, such as breeding, milk or export. The advisor will explain whether they can be covered and on what terms.
Why do my animals need to be identified?
Each covered animal must be identifiable, so that a claim can be matched to an animal named in your schedule. This is usually done with ear tags, brands or other marks agreed with Kalkaal. Keep identification in place and up to date. If an animal dies, photograph its identification and keep the tag for your claim.
Are animals covered while they are transported for export?
Livestock Mortality Takaful covers animals at the locations and during the activities stated in your schedule. Cover while animals are moved by road or shipped is not automatic. Tell a Kalkaal advisor how, when and where your animals travel, so you can discuss whether transport can be added or whether a shipment belongs under Marine Takaful.
Are medical conditions I already have covered?
Conditions you had before you travelled are not covered unless you declare them and Kalkaal accepts them in your schedule. Tell a Kalkaal advisor about any existing conditions and medicines before you decide. Travel Takaful is for sudden illness or injury while you travel, not for planned treatment or for travel against medical advice.
What is Domestic Travel Accident Takaful?
Domestic Travel Accident Takaful gives accident cover for journeys within the territory stated in your schedule, for example travel between towns for work or to visit family. It provides the benefits set out in your schedule if an accident during the journey causes death or disability. A Kalkaal advisor can explain how it differs from Travel Takaful for your trip.
Can I use my Travel Takaful schedule for a visa application?
Some embassies and universities ask for proof of travel cover, and their requirements differ. Tell a Kalkaal advisor what is being asked for, such as the type of cover and the dates. The advisor will tell you whether a Travel Takaful schedule can meet the requirement before you decide. Cover starts only when Kalkaal confirms it in your schedule.
What is the difference between Contractors' All Risks and Erection All Risks?
Contractors' All Risks covers civil and building works, such as houses, offices, roads and bridges, while they are being built. Erection All Risks covers the installation of machinery, plant and steel structures, including testing before handover. Many projects involve both, and a Kalkaal advisor can explain which cover fits each part of your project.
Should the contractor or the project owner arrange project cover?
Either can, and the contract often says who must. Contractors' All Risks and Erection All Risks can name the project owner, the main contractor and sub-contractors together, so everyone with an interest in the works is protected under one schedule. Share the contract's cover requirements with a Kalkaal advisor at the start.
Why do I need Machinery Breakdown cover if I already have Property Takaful?
Property cover protects against external events such as fire, storm and burglary, but it usually excludes internal mechanical or electrical breakdown. Machinery Breakdown Takaful fills that gap, and Machinery Loss of Profit Takaful can cover the income lost while production is stopped. Together they protect both the machine and the business it supports.
Should I choose Energy Package Takaful or separate covers?
A package brings the main covers for your operation together, which can make your cover simpler to manage. Separate covers can suit businesses that need one specific cover, or that already hold some protection elsewhere. A Kalkaal advisor looks at your sites, stock and activities and explains the options before you decide.
Is pollution covered?
Gradual seepage, leakage and contamination are not covered. Sudden and accidental pollution that injures third parties or damages their property may be included under Energy Third-Party Liability Takaful, where your schedule says so. Good safety and spill-response procedures matter, and a Kalkaal advisor will ask about yours.
Are breakdowns of generators and pumps covered?
Energy Property All Risks Takaful covers sudden physical loss or damage, such as fire or explosion, but not internal mechanical or electrical breakdown. Breakdown of generators, pumps and other plant can be covered under Machinery Breakdown Takaful, described on the Engineering Takaful page. Ask a Kalkaal advisor how the two can work together.
Can our savings group or cooperative join together?
Yes. Community Group Takaful lets a savings group, cooperative or association cover its members together under one arrangement. The group shares a member list and names a contact person, and each member's cover is shown in the schedule. A Kalkaal advisor explains the cover, exclusions and contribution before the members decide.
I work for myself. Can I still be covered?
Yes. Community Takaful is designed for people who work for themselves, such as market traders, drivers and labourers, as well as for people in employment. You do not need an employer to arrange it. Tell a Kalkaal advisor what kind of work you do, because some occupations carry more risk and this may affect the terms.
How is Community Takaful different from Personal Accident Takaful?
Both are based on accident cover. Community Takaful keeps the cover simple, with set benefits designed for everyday earners, families and community groups. Personal Accident Takaful lets individuals and employers choose benefit levels to suit an income or staff grades. A Kalkaal advisor can help you see which suits your situation better.
How is Personal Accident Takaful different from Medical Takaful?
Medical Takaful helps meet the cost of treatment. Personal Accident Takaful pays set benefits if an accident causes death, permanent disability or time off work, whatever your medical costs are. The benefit is paid to you or your family to use as you need, so many people choose to hold both covers.
Does group cover protect staff outside working hours?
It can. Group Personal Accident Takaful can be arranged to cover staff at work only, or at work and away from work, and the schedule states which applies. Tell a Kalkaal advisor what your staff do and how often they travel for work, so the cover matches how your business operates.
Does my job affect my cover?
Yes. The risk of an accident varies with the work people do, so occupation affects the terms and the contribution. Some hazardous occupations, sports and activities are covered only if they are declared and accepted. Tell a Kalkaal advisor about your work and activities, and tell Kalkaal if they change during the period of cover.
What does 'claims-made' mean for Professional Indemnity Takaful?
Professional Indemnity Takaful is written on a claims-made basis. It covers claims first made against you, and reported to Kalkaal, during the period of cover, even if the work was done earlier, subject to any retroactive date in your schedule. Claims made after cover ends are not covered, so keeping cover in place without a gap matters.
What is the difference between Employers' Liability and Workers' Compensation Takaful?
Employers' Liability Takaful covers you when an employee claims that you were legally responsible for their injury or disease at work. Workers' Compensation Takaful covers the compensation employees are entitled to for injury at work under the applicable law or employment terms, without needing to prove fault. A Kalkaal advisor can explain which your business needs.
Do I need Public Liability, Product Liability or both?
Public Liability covers injury or damage caused by your premises and activities, such as a visitor slipping in your shop. Product Liability covers injury or damage caused by products you make, sell or supply after they leave your hands. Businesses that serve customers on their premises and also supply goods often need both.
What is Kafalah?
Kafalah is the Islamic contract of guarantee. One party, the guarantor, takes on responsibility for another party's obligation to a third party. In a bond, Kalkaal acts as guarantor to the project owner for your obligations under the tender or contract. Kalkaal's bonds are structured under Kafalah, subject to the approval of its Shariah Supervisory Board.
If Kalkaal pays under a bond, do I have to repay it?
Yes. A bond guarantees your obligations; it is not cover for your own losses. If Kalkaal pays the project owner under a valid demand, you repay Kalkaal the amount paid, as agreed in the counter-indemnity you sign before the bond is issued. Kalkaal may also ask for security before it issues a bond.
What happens to my bid bond if I win the contract?
A bid bond usually ends when you sign the contract and provide any performance bond or advance payment bond the project owner requires. If you do not win, the bid bond ends on its expiry date or when the project owner releases it. The tender documents set out the exact conditions.
How does index cover work?
Index cover pays according to a measured index, such as rainfall at a weather station or the average yield in your area, rather than an assessment of each farm. When the index falls outside the agreed level, payment follows the method in your schedule, so your own losses may be higher or lower than the payment. Area Yield Index and Weather Index Takaful are subject to Shariah Supervisory Board approval.
Are fishing boats covered on this page?
No. Fishing vessels belong under Marine Takaful, where they can be covered through Hull and Machinery Takaful. Agriculture and Fisheries Takaful covers fish farms, including fish stock in ponds, tanks and cages. If you run both a fish farm and fishing vessels, a Kalkaal advisor can explain how the two covers fit together.
Can a farmers' cooperative arrange cover for its members?
A cooperative or agricultural business can ask for cover for its members' crops, flocks or fish stock. A Kalkaal advisor will ask for details of each member's farm, location and production, and explains the cover, exclusions and contribution before the cooperative decides. Cover starts only when Kalkaal confirms it in your schedule.
